Rye – April – What’s On?

Welcome to edition 4 of my personal recommendations in Rye and the local area from the perspective of a designer with a penchant for seeking out the most special places and experiences. Surrounding myself with the cultural, curated and curious.

Now that the weather is (finally!) warming up, I’m looking forward to long evenings spent outdoors, with a glass of something lovely, surrounded by my favourite people. After a few false starts with the weather, I’m seeing more and more glimmers of summer creeping ever closer, which is filling me with no end of excitement and inspiration!

Keep reading to hear about a beautiful space to visit over the weekend, as well as an upcoming event to see some amazing artists at my studio home, the Rye Creative Centre.

One of my favourite places to visit in Camber, is the gorgeous cafe/deli and lifestyle shop, Camber Landing. If you have stumbled across Rae Lifestyle on The Mint in Rye, you’ll be pleased to hear they also have a retail space here, too!

It’s the perfect pit-stop if you’re out for a walk across the dunes, with or without the dogs in tow. They also host yoga classes on a Friday morning, which I’m keen to try - especially when there are pastries in close proximity for a post-workout treat!

Rye Creative Centre Open Studios

I’m so thrilled to share that the RCC is holding another Open Studios event, on the 10th and 11th May. It’s a wonderful opportunity for my studio neighbours and I to open our doors and give you an insight into the space where we pour our hearts and souls into our art. Below I’ve shared a couple of incredibly talented artists who should be at the top of your list to visit!

Not only is the event a chance to see ‘behind the scenes’, but you’ll also have the opportunity to meet and purchase from the artists directly. Find out more about the event here!

If you’ve visited the Rye Creative Centre before, then you may be familiar with the undeniably talented Paula MacArthur. Honestly, I couldn’t let another blog go by without sharing my admiration for her paintings. She depicts the most amazing, other-worldly interpretations of gemstones, and in her words “a contemporary interpretation of traditional memento mori & vanitas painting.” She says “my subject is light and love, and the fragility of life.”

You’ll find her in studio 201, and you can see her artist profile on the RCC website here.

Georgie Watson

Another artist I know you’ll love is Georgie Watson, you’ll find her in studio 104. Her space is full of stunning landscape paintings, inspired by the local area and her love of watersports. Her use of colour to portray weather, movement, mood, and perspective is nothing short of incredible. If you want to feel transported to the dunes at Camber, the Romney Marshes, or perhaps the palms from her travels across the globe, you’ll find yourself right in the centre of the scenes that adorn her space.

Find her artist profile here.

Of course, this blog would be far too long if I was to name every artist I admire in the RCC, but both Paula and Georgie inspire me daily as I work on my own collections, their combination of work from nature, precious stones, and powerful feminine energies lend themselves perfectly to my collections if I’m ever feeling stuck or in need of a muse.

I really hope to see you next month at the RCC, you’ll find me in studio 102, where I’ll share my current collections along with a sneak peek into the prototypes and evolution of new pieces.

I’ll be back next month for another instalment of my personal guide to Rye from an artist’s perspective.
